Today, let us introduce to you one of our Salsa and Bachata social dancer šŸ˜ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Meet Mark!

Tell us a little about yourself!

Hi, I'm Mark Sun, a tech entrepreneur. I've worked in the tech scenes of Taipei and Tokyo before returning to Singapore. Besides tech, I also enjoy modern art and Latin dance.

How did you get into learning Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and/or Zouk dance in Singapore?

My journey into dance has been quite an adventure. I first dipped my toes into Salsa dance many years ago. At the time, catching beats 1, 2, and 3 seemed like a formidable task. I remember times of hesitation on the dance floor, often missing a beat, being corrected by my dance partners.

Eventually, I stepped away. However, I recently asked myself: had I really given my all to understanding the music? Consequently, Salsa music was incorporated into my daily routines, even jogging sessions. Surprisingly, it finally clicked! Post-COVID, the desire to reignite this dance passion led me to Caliente Dance Studio. Their trial classes and flexible schedule were a blessing given my work commitments. The well-structured classes, along with social sessions after class, helped cement the dance moves in muscle memory.

What is your favourite dance class and why?

I've been fortunate to delve into Kizomba, Salsa and Bachata dance classes at Caliente Dance Studio, enjoying each style. Bachata partner dance, however, has a special allure. The hypnotic rhythm of Bachata music is enthralling. Watching professional dancers, their movements appear fluid and effortless, yet there's an underlying complexity. Every body, hand and leg movement is a nuanced communication, preparing or leading the follower through each dance step.

Lately, I've felt a renewed attraction to Salsa, intrigued by its dynamic interplay of tension and the push-pull energy it harnesses. This brings a vibrant dimension to the social dance, making every step an engaging conversation.

What do you enjoy the most about dancing Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and/or Zouk?

Dance is a celebration of connection and expression. It's a space where we connect on a purely human level, where the background, language and culture doesn't matter. The beauty of social dance lies in this shared experience, a real-time improvisation that transcends our differences and creates a bond, however transient that moment may be.

What reasons will you give to someone to start learning how to dance Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and/or Zouk?

Imagine this - being able to step into a Latin dance club in any city around the world and sharing a dance with someone you've just met. That's the power of Latin social dance.

Which Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and/or Zouk song do you like the most?

Choosing a favorite is tough! If forced to pick, songs like SeƱorita (Bachata version) by Alex Tapia, Tutu by Camilo & Pedro CapĆ³ and Sexo Con Ropa by Romeo Santos certainly resonate with me. Each song transports me back to different moments in my dance journey.
