Caliente Salsa and Bachata Student Spotlight - Maya

Today, let us introduce to you one of our Salsa and Bachata social dancer šŸ˜ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Meet Maya!

Tell us a little about yourself!

Hi, my name is Maya! I am a music teacher from Japan and I've been living in Singapore for the last 2 years. I am currently taking Salsa and Bachata lessons to try my skills at social dancing. I'm looking to keep taking dance lessons at Caliente Dance Studio and hopefully adding solo dancing to my repertoire soon as well.

How did you get into learning Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and/or Zouk dance in Singapore?

I've always had a fascination for people with the skills to dance. And also as a music teacher, anything related to music always catches my attention. I started learning Salsa and Bachata after my friend kept taking me to different social dancing events. At some point I decided it wouldn't hurt learning how to dance myself. And now that I've finished a few levels, I just want to keep improving!

What is your favourite dance class and why?

I've been learning Salsa and Bachata side by side and I honestly couldn't choose which one is my favorite. I think both of them are equally fun, challenging and requires different skills. I'm sure the more experience I get in both genres, the more I'll get to learn what kind of dancer I am and figure out which one I like more.

What do you enjoy the most about dancing Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and/or Zouk?

Just like any musical activity you're a part of, dancing requires you to live in the moment. I guess some people do this through sports or artistic project or redoing their house. For me there is something exhilarating about letting yourself be exactly as you are and feeling the music or moving in accordance to your partner.

What reasons will you give to someone to start learning how to dance Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and/or Zouk?

If anyone wants a way to spruce up their life, add a new skill, socialize or simply become a better dancer, I think taking lessons is a great way to accomplish it. People tend to be timid about dancing especially when they don't have any experience. I think the whole point of learning is to get better no matter where you're start from. Caliente has such a lovely, friendly atmosphere that allows you to improve at your own speed. If you have a body that can move, why not? You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Which Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and/or Zouk song do you like the most?

Currently, I am into Bachata pieces more. La Bachata and Clavaito always makes me want to get up and dance.
