Caliente Salsa and Bachata Student Spotlight - Singapore - Karen Sarmiento

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

This week we asked one of our Performance Training Student to answer few questions.

Meet Karen!

How did you get into learning Salsa and Bachata?

I visited Cali, Colombia, and I saw some people dancing wonderfully, then I thought I would be happy doing that, but I thought it was going to be so hard for me. When I was child, my school dance teacher told me I didn't have the rhythm, and during my teen years I was listening to rock music, then, I haven't ever imagined myself dancing. However, in June from 2019 I joined a salsa course in Bogotá, Colombia. In the first classes I was overwhelmed with all the new movements and the salsa world. However, I tried, and I loved the boogaloo, bolero and cha, cha, cha classes. Definitely, I found a new love there: dancing salsa. Regarding bachata... Well, now I'm learning with Caliente studio, so you are introducing me into this world.

What’s your favourite Dance so far and why?

I love salsa. I have been dancing in a social environment and I think the energy and the connection you can make dancing at the rhythm of salsa is great. You have fun and your body feels happy.

What do you enjoy the most from Dancing?

I really enjoy the feeling of nothing else care. When I dance I feel the music and I am not thinking about anything else.

What reasons would you give to someone to start learning Dancing?

When you dance you have an experience you can't describe with words. However, you are happy, you feel tired but with the satisfaction of doing something challenging.

What Salsa or Bachata song do you like the most?

I have a few, but the ones I like the most are: Arroz con habichuela - El gran Combo de Puerto Rico; La cara del payaso - Joe Arroyo; Salchicha con huevos - Jimmy Sabater y El cuarto de Tula - Buena vista social club.
