Caliente Salsa and Bachata Student Spotlight - Singapore - Shilpi

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

This week, we are excited to introduce to you one of our dancer who has been doing both solo and partner classes!

Meet the beautiful Shilpi :)

How did you get into learning Salsa and/or Bachata?

I’ve always been a big lover of dance. When I was younger, I trained in a classical Indian form (Bharatanatyam) for many years, and generally do a lot of Bollywood dancing. I enjoy these a lot, but I really wanted to expand my horizons a bit, and learn something new. Then my boyfriend, who has been doing Bachata and Kizomba for a couple of years now, kept mentioning how much fun it was; before I knew it, I had signed up for Bachata. Now I’ve fallen in love with it too!

What’s your favorite Dance class so far and why?

I’m really enjoying the Bachata Ladies Styling classes so far. While the other solo and partner classes are really helping me nail down the footwork and techniques, the styling classes help me feel much more comfortable when moving, and teach me how to use my arms and hips. Bachata is such a sensual dance in general, but the ladies styling class really gets me to let loose and feel the music with my whole body. It’s very liberating!

What do you enjoy the most from Dancing?

It’s such a confidence boost! Anytime I’m struggling with a step that I finally manage to nail, or watch myself in the mirror and see improvements class after class, it makes me feel so proud. Not to mention it’s a fun way to stay active and discover some nice music.

What reasons would you give to someone to start learning Dancing?

Dancing is so therapeutic. Just listening to fun music, feeling the rhythm and moving to the beat; is there any better way to spend your time? On top of that, it’s a great way to improve your hand-eye coordination, and just overall feel comfortable in your own body.

What Salsa or Bachata song do you like the most?

I feel like every week I find a new song I love, so this keeps changing. But I quite like one I heard recently at Caliente – “Bubalu” by DJ Tronky and J-Style.

Thank you for the inspirational sharing, Shilpi!
